A fatal train derailment in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive critical opposition regarding the speed and management of the country's major public works projects.
The disaster happened on the trans-isthmus railway, a rail link developed to join the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was designed to offer an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, intended to promote regional growth in the area.
“We shall thoroughly investigate what caused this tragedy,” stated the country's president.
The leader announced that, of the around 250 passengers on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in grave condition. The official noted plans to visit Oaxaca to speak with those impacted.
Key Undertaking of Previous Administration
The Interoceanic Train was a central development scheme of the former leader, whose time in office concluded the year before. This venture was intimately linked to his government's economic agenda for the southern region.
Another ambitious railway undertaking from that time, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the wider plan to stimulate the economy of a relatively less developed part of the country.
Project Execution and Worries
The building of both rail lines was managed by the army, marking a notable expansion of its duties in national infrastructure. They were executed at an accelerated speed, beating expectations to be partially inaugurated before the end of that administration.
However, this rushed timetable had also sparked persistent concerns over operational security.
- Sunday's accident was the third event on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
- This includes an previous accident this month when a train struck a truck at a level crossing.
- The other major rail project has also seen several non-lethal derailments.
Appeals for Investigation and Halt
In the aftermath of the disaster, the leader of a key rival party demanded an prompt suspension in the building and running of all such projects.
This pause was proposed until the completion of a full safety audit. The party stated that the tragedy "demands prompt explanations."
In response, the president asserted that the train had been functioning in total accordance with all operational standards. Promises were given that the government would continue to be "accountable" in both the development and running of these vital projects.
