Jair Bolsonaro has been detained after authorities concluded he posed a definite escape threat while under home confinement.

The former head of state was convicted of planning a military coup in September and given more than over two decades in jail, but he was staying under home detention pending appeals.

High Court Judge Alexandre de Moraes said the decision to arrest the septuagenarian politician was a safety action after recent developments emerged.

This involved seeking to disable his electronic bracelet and a call for a public vigil that could enable a potential flight.

Court Filing Details Escape Concerns

In a paperwork permitting the arrest, Justice Moraes said intelligence from the unit overseeing the former president's confinement suggested the ex-president's plan to remove the electronic ankle bracelet to guarantee victory in his getaway".

This, it said, would be made easier by the chaos caused by the demonstration called by his child.

His son, Flávio Bolsonaro, who serves as a legislator, called for a meeting of his supporters near the former president's residence to take place on Saturday night.

Flávio Bolsonaro wrote on digital networks on the previous day: Do you plan to struggle for your homeland, or watch it all from your mobile device there on your sofa? I invite you to fight with us."

He said the demonstration would be so backers could offer prayers for his health and for the restoration of democratic rule in our nation."

Embassy Asylum Concerns

Details of Guilty Verdict
