Just as the recent storm tore through the north-west the prior day, the home side overwhelmed Manchester United away at the their home ground. It was a statement 3-0 victory for their manager's side owing to goals from Knaak, Bunny Shaw and Hemp. It was a performance that clearly signaled their championship potential as they strengthened their position at the top of the table.

Successive Losses for United

This outcome signalled consecutive WSL setbacks for Marc Skinner’s side for the initial occasion since spring 2024, placing them a significant margin off the top team with their trophy ambitions severely dented.

The Red Devils' capacity to manage league and continental soccer with a limited squad has been a widely debated subject since they qualified for the European competition. Looking at the fixture list, it always seemed this was the matchday that would truly test this ability. Regrettably for the away side, they looked fatigued from start to finish, the landmark win against PSG clearly having left its mark.

Lineup Adjustments

Skinner had sought to freshen things up with a handful of adjustments. Ella Toone, Elisabeth Terland, Janssen and Galton all provided energy, although the omission of the high-performing Malard to the sidelines raised a few eyebrows.

The hosts, in comparison, have no such fitness concerns. The City coach made a single alteration from the previous win over Everton with Lauren Hemp making her initial starting appearance since healing from a physical setback.

Dominant First Half

The pressure started to gather for the United boss and his team from the first whistle. This was a show of the strength from Manchester City whose dynamic attack manipulated and dismantled the opposition with a superb initial 45 minutes display that saw them put three past the keeper in under half an hour.

This left the home team completely dominant and had Manchester United struggling. In advance of this fixture, United had allowed just few in this league campaign but they disintegrated in the presence of City’s attacking flair.

Opening Threats

The warning signs came quickly when Miedema used her strength to bundle Julia Zigiotti off the ball, only to pull her shot past the post. Hemp was at the core of everything early on, taking advantage of the room left by Riviere down the visitors' right side. Her crosses were causing problems and led to an attempt for Yui Hasegawa that Anna Sandberg kicked off the line.

United had multiple sorties forwards, their straightforward approach giving them choices in the flanks but they could not challenge Ayaka Yamashita. Manchester City, meanwhile, commanded possession, teasing their opponents and trying to lure them of their defensive shape.

Scoring Spree

They turned chances into goals with almost the first period played when Aoba Fujino won the home team a corner. A cross to the far post was directed across goal by Bunny Shaw for Rebecca Knaak to head in. It was City’s seventh header of the term.

They extended their cushion with an additional two goals just before the half-time. When Jade Rose was able to advance through the midfield from central defence, the pitch widened for City. The key Casparij received possession on the right before delivering a precise driven ball for Bunny Shaw to bundle home. Shortly later, they had a third after a quick change in possession saw Lauren Hemp given the opportunity to drive a shot home from outside the box.

Second Half

The primary adjustment came from Skinner at the break as Malard came on for Terland but by this time it was ineffective to change the course of the contest. Former City player Jess Park came nearest, hitting the woodwork, but the away team were creatively abject and were unable to register a solitary shot on target.

The home side, on the other hand, could have increased their cushion when a delightful Miedema long ball sent Shaw away only for her to miss the chance but it did not affect the result to the winning team. Previously unable to overcome any opponent who ended above them the previous campaign, the manager's side now have wins against Arsenal and Manchester United to put them in a strong situation after the opening fixtures.
