Earth is facing challenges, yet there is hope. A novel accolade from the interdisciplinary festival Starmus will inspire the public to act.

This new Earth medal bearing Jane Goodall's name is to be awarded in honour of the esteemed scientist and conservationist who died this year. It is designed to celebrate those who advocate for life on Earth.

The Medal's Framework

The inaugural winners will be revealed during the upcoming Starmus event in the Canary Islands, which will run from October 17th to 22nd next year.

Reports indicate that Goodall, a former member of the festival's board, had supported the award’s creation. “The idea of having this medal, and Starmus being entrusted with organising it, was Jane's wish,” a representative said. “She said she would like for this to occur. And I think because of the close connection she shared with us.”

“The Starmus Jane Goodall Earth medal aims to highlight sustainable programmes carried out to build an environment improved for all living beings and ecosystems and provide encouragement for the continuation such efforts,” commented a relative.

Format and Inspiration

A co-founder of the festival stated that the medal – unveiled at a prestigious venue – will likely encompass various fields.

“It will be modeled after the Stephen Hawking medal honoring scientific outreach established a decade past,” he explained. Goodall was a recipient of that very medal.

Sharing thoughts about the future for Earth, a prominent voice stated, “Honestly, it is difficult to feel hopeful. Present governance in one major nation represents a war on science. So this undermines the world’s efforts.”

“Realistically, things don’t look particularly bright therefore we must begin to reconsidering, with greater urgency about the consequences of human activity. And that’s not only global warming, that’s the entire manner that we treat our environment.”

Inspiring Change

As a result, observers believe this is a good time to honor her guiding principles. “It is believed that in bestowing the prize, the focus will be on this essential spirit of Jane’s – which made her foremost concern, to transform how we regard the other animals with which we share the planet.”

A major topic today is the proliferation of disinformation. The focus of the upcoming festival is set as “the pursuit of factual understanding”.

“It has become apparent that factual reality is becoming contested when politics is involved. This is a very dangerous thing,” he commented. “Climate research is a science; it is impossible to allow interference by political agendas in this field.”

Hope and Determination

The hope remains that the medal will inspire action. “It’s about motivating others to participate and to show concern and to strive in that direction, really. Whether or not we’re optimistic, we have to look at doing the best we can,” it was added. “Accept the possibility of failure, but you still have to work to achieve positive outcomes.”

A descendant engaged in environmental protection expressed optimism that “with guidance and when empowered, humanity can be diligent stewards of Earth”, citing the initiatives of a foundation that, among its other activities, helps the youth become engaged with their community, animals, and the natural world.

“As my late grandmother often reminded us, the choices we make each day have an impact and the responsibility lies with us what type of impact we choose to create,” he said. “We still have an opportunity and this medal will provide inspiration and increase understanding about constructive efforts that people are making.”
